Tennessee Titans linebacker Cedric Gray returned to the field in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles after missing the season opener due to a freak UTV accident over Labor Day weekend.

Gray entered concussion protocol following the incident, which kept him out of the Titans’ Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets. He was cleared to play this week, but his snap count was noticeably limited, raising questions about his role alongside Anthony Hill and Cody Barton moving forward.

Gray speaks publicly about the accident for the first time

Gray hadn’t spoken to reporters since before Labor Day weekend. In the locker room after the Eagles game, he explained what happened:

“Yeah, so obviously you guys heard I was in an accident. So to keep it long story short, Labor Day weekend, just went out to the mountain— the mountains with some friends to see some mountain views. I was in the UTV car, was driving, and got met with some oncoming traffic. And we were trying to basically kind of squeeze past each other. It was a tight space, and the back wheel of my car kind of went off the side, and it basically tilted and went tumbling down a little bit. So it was a pretty freak accident. I’m blessed to be here, blessed to still be alive. Blessed to still be able to play this game. It was a pretty freak accident, so to walk away with just concussion is a blessing, so I’m just happy to be here.”

So if I’m understanding him correctly, Gray and another vehicle were trying to pass one another on a narrow road on the side of a mountain. His back wheel caught the lip off the edge of the road, and the UTV tilted and tumbled down the side of the mountain?!

The fact that he walked away with just a concussion, and the fact that he said he’s lucky to be alive, tells you how serious this was. To get a concussion in a UTV accident either requires you to not be wearing a helmet, or to get into a pretty significant wreck. It sounds like this was the latter.

I can actually relate to this on some level, having taken a trip during COVID with my family out to Utah. We did a day of UTV driving in the desert over big sand dunes and rock formations, and I came very close to flipping a UTV over with my family in it when I was in my early 20s. It’s easier to do than you may think.

I think it’s a little bit reassuring that this sounds more like a freak accident than it was Gray being reckless or foolish. Some would argue that putting yourself in an all-terrain vehicle the week before opening day is foolish in and of itself, which… yes. But there are levels to this. He could have been doing something inherently dumb in the vehicle, and it sounds like this was just an unfortunate situation.

What Gray’s limited snap count means going forward

As for his return to play, Gray played significantly fewer snaps than both rookie Anthony Hill, who started at mike linebacker for the second consecutive week, and Cody Barton, who remained at will linebacker. That’s notable because Gray emerged as this team’s star starting linebacker last season at the will position alongside Barton, who played mike for his entire Titans tenure up until last week’s game against the Jets. Barton only slid to will (seemingly) out of necessity without Gray in the lineup, but he stayed there in Week 2 even with Gray back.

Gray was getting a fraction of Barton’s snaps throughout the game (30 to 59), which leaves things a bit unclear. Is this just a ramp-up situation coming off the concussion protocol, or is it a sign of a more lasting change?

It would be a real upset if Gray suddenly became the third linebacker and Barton continued in a starting role at a position he has very little experience at. I’m almost certain it’s just a ramp-up situation after having missed time, but next week will be pretty telling in that regard. If Gray’s snap count remains suppressed in Week 3, that’s when questions about a potential shakeup in the linebacker rotation would start to carry real weight.
