NASHVILLE — Scrutiny comes with the quarterback position at every level of football. Cam Ward understands that it is all a part of the job playing in the NFL as a former No. 1 overall pick.

His response when asked about struggles in the Tennessee Titans offseason program on Tuesday came with about as much perspective as one could ask for.

Offseason program is the perfect place for trial and error

Cam Ward understands this.

“Every play, honestly,” said Ward on how often he’s testing his limits. “This is the time to do stuff that I do a lot in the game. It just depends, you know, what coverage our defense presents. Our defense is real good at disguising. So, me seeing it faster and then already knowing what route I want to get to while I’m dropping back and then declaring whether I have to move in the pocket or not to get to the checkown. So, it really just depends on what the defense has coverage-wise and we have to be able to react to it.”

Would you like for it to look more crisp than it has? Of course.

Ward has not been overwhelmingly impressive just to watch him in OTAs. On the first day of Tennessee’s three-day minicamp, Ward performed better than in previous weeks. The sophomore out of Miami completed more than half of his passes on Tuesday with one, touchdown and a red zone Pick 6 to Amani Hooker.

There was general command and comfort for Ward in team sessions throughout the day.

We will see if he can stack back-to-back days of good work before the league’s upcoming six-week hiatus and ride into the offseason on a high note.
