NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans begin training camp in less than one week. Second-year quarterback Cam Ward’s offseason focus on mechanics should yield visible improvement from the jump. 

Ward, the 2025 No. 1 overall pick, spent a rocky rookie season navigating coaching changes, a dismal roster, and the chaos that comes with being the face of a rebuilding franchise. 

The Titans’ offseason program offered glimpses of where Ward still needs to grow. The technical refinement he and new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll have prioritized could be the most significant development of this entire offseason. That matters because Ward’s path forward won’t be paved by highlight-reel throws alone.

Cam Ward doesn’t have to be the best at anything right now

Does Ward have the best arm in the NFL? 

No. Would anyone slot him into even a top-five conversation among NFL quarterbacks in terms of arm strength and throw variety? I think you could very easily keep him outside the top 10 right now. Is he the league’s best evaluator of defenses heading into year two? Of course not. Is he the toughest quarterback in the league? You could make an argument, but plenty of signal-callers display plus toughness in how they lead and how they play.

The point is not to diminish Ward. 

He is obviously talented and capable of spectacular moments. Spectacular moments alone don’t define your success as an NFL quarterback. They can highlight it, but they do not define it. Ward’s consistency will come through more routine, more monotonous methods. 

That starts with cleaning up his footwork.

During the offseason program, Ward did not look like the best practice player on the days media had access. There were obvious accuracy issues he was still working through. By the time mandatory minicamp arrived, things improved, but the sample was limited. 

The work he and Daboll have invested in since then should show up when camp opens.
