The Tennessee Titans defensive line should be the heartbeat of this football team in 2026.

That might sound obvious given the talent Robert Saleh has to work with up front, but I’m not sure we’re appreciating it the way we should. With Jeffrey Simmons and John Franklin-Myers forming what might be the best interior duo in the NFL, and a deep rotation behind them, the Titans defensive front is the one unit on this roster with genuine top-5 upside. Everything else may be clunky. Everything else may take time. But if the D-line lives up to its potential, Tennessee’s defense has a real chance to carry this team.

The best unit the Titans will field in 2026

I would put Simmons and Franklin-Myers up against any interior pairing in the league right now. I don’t think anybody else stacks up. Simmons has been the anchor of this defensive line for years, and Franklin-Myers proved in Denver that he can be a high-level starter on a ferocious front. Together, they give the Titans a legitimately suffocating presence on the inside.

And the depth behind them is legit. There are younger players on this roster who still need to show more, but the potential is there for a group that can throw wave after wave at opposing offenses and derail game plans. If those developmental pieces take even a modest step forward, this becomes a defensive line that can control football games on its own.

The case for the best defense Saleh has ever coached

I want to shout out the conversation Stoney Keeley and I had on this topic, because it sparked a lot of this thinking. Stoney came in with what might be my favorite hot take in a long time: he believes this is the best defense Robert Saleh has ever coached. And Saleh has coached some… pretty monstrous defenses! The Jets defenses were great for most of his tenure, and the 2019 49ers defense was elite too. Those were top-5, top-3, arguably top-1 units in the league during those seasons. Stoney’s argument is that on paper, the talent on this Titans roster is as good or better than all of them.

But the gem of any historically great Saleh defense has always been the defensive line. If the “best defense Saleh has ever coached” claim has any merit, it starts and ends with the guys up front.

The only unit with sky-high expectations

The Titans defensive line is the only group on this entire roster where I have firm high expectations. If they’re just average, I’m going to be sorely disappointed. There is no other part of this team where you can say “they were just average” and feel genuinely let down. The offensive weapons around Cam Ward are exciting, and if that side of the ball becomes the identity of this team, that’s fantastic. But average is not acceptable from this defensive front given the talent and investment Tennessee has poured into it.

That’s a fair standard to hold them to, and I think most people following this team would agree. We’ve talked about these guys at such a high level all offseason that the expectations have been baked in. The more I learn about how Saleh plans to deploy this group and the roles each player is expected to fill, the more confident I am that the ceiling is real.

The bottom line is this: if the Titans are going to take a meaningful step in 2026, the defensive line has to lead the way. The rest of the roster has questions. The front office is still building around Cam Ward. But up front, Tennessee has the pieces to be elite. Now it’s about proving it on the field.
