Myles Garrett shares how Taylor Lewan was his ‘welcome to the NFL’ moment ‘bending the rules’ during Titans-Browns game in 2017
You won’t believe what Titans legend Taylor Lewan did to the best defensive player in the league in 2017. Myles Garrett was a rookie, and Lewan welcomed him to the league in an insane way.
On a live version of the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, reigning DPOY Myles Garrett joined the live panel to talk life in the NFL. When asked about his “welcome to the NFL moment”, he shared a crazy story about former Titans LT Taylor Lewan from 2017 that has to be heard to be beleived.
Taylor Lewan did something insane to rookie Myles Garrett
Former NFL lineman Andrew Whitworth joined the Kelce brothers on a panel with Garrett for this portion of their LA live show. Garrett was asked to share his “welcome to the NFL” story, and here’s what he went with:
I wouldn’t say there was like a play where somebody just whipped my ass, but I remember I was going against Taylor Lewan. It was my first year and I knew he was bending the rules a little bit, you know, from what I had heard.”
“Smart player, smart player, smart player” all of the offensive players on the stage jokingly chimed in. “We call that a wiley veteran in the O-line room.”
Garrett continued. “We line up and it’s like first and 10, and I line up tight. I know that the run’s coming, they got freaking Derrick Henry at that time. And (Lewan) gets into a stance. He looks at me and spits right in my face.”
“Wow. Whoa, whoa!” said everybody else in the room, correctly identifying that as a clinically insane thing to do to Myles Garrett. “Welcome right to the NFL,” Garrett finished. “And I was like, I promise next time I see you, I’m a whip your ass.”
Garrett promised to get his lick back on Lewan, and was given that opportunity two season later in the 2019 opener. I have good news and bad news for the pass rusher in this story: he did, in fact, play even better the next time. He got two sacks and two tackles for loss in that game. The bad news is that the Titans trounced Cleveland in their own house, winning 43-13. Just another day in the life of a Myles Garrett trapped on a Cleveland Browns team.
