Titans fans’ love for Cam Ward reaches new heights at final Nissan Stadium training camp scrimmage
I’ve covered all of the Tennessee Titans high investment quarterbacks over the last dozen year and Cam Ward gets a different reaction from the fan base.
Cam Ward put on a show at the Tennessee Titans’ Blue and White scrimmage, the final training camp practice at Nissan Stadium. The first overall pick completed passes to Carnell Tate and a TD to Gunnar Helm, and showed the kind of poise and pocket awareness that has the Titans fan base buzzing. Ward’s connection with fans after the scrimmage was something unlike anything the franchise has seen from a quarterback in recent memory.
The Cam Ward effect on Titans fans
I’ve covered the Titans for a long time. I’ve covered Jay Locker, a top-10 pick. I’ve covered Marcus Mariota, the second overall pick. I’ve covered Ryan Tannehill, the offensive comeback player of the year, a former first-round pick when he arrived in Nashville. I’ve covered quarterbacks with a lot invested in them. I have never seen the Titans fan base treat those guys like they treat Cam Ward.
He’s got the juice. They love Cam Ward.
I followed Ward around the entire stadium after the scrimmage. We almost took a second lap before he turned back around and headed inside because he had a press conference to get to. Marcus Mariota had long autograph lines back in his day, but the way these kids reacted to Ward was on another level. Teenage boys, elementary school kids. I don’t know if it’s Gen Z or Gen Alpha, but it felt like what Taylor Swift must feel like. They were making those sounds. It was incredible.
Ward was patient, went to every area of the field, and signed for as many fans as he could. I documented a lot of it on the A to Z Sports X account. This guy is a superstar to the fans who showed up Friday night.
He just has to make it happen on the field. The bar is high, and that love can change in a hurry. Tennessee really needs this guy to work out.
Ward showed growth in his second training camp
On the field, Ward was good to very good. Early on, he was sharp. His first drive featured no incompletions before stalling in the high red zone because of a tackle for loss on running back Tyjae Spears.
The second drive was gorgeous. Ward dropped a pass into the back of the end zone to tight end Helm with Cody Barton draped all over him. Helm got both feet in with a fancy toe tap on a first-and-goal from the 5 out of 13-personnel.
That second drive is where the biggest growth checkpoint of Ward’s offseason showed up. A lot of running back checkdowns. Not forcing it downfield. Discipline. And the short throws weren’t inaccurate, either. He created with his legs, showed good pocket awareness, got rid of the ball when he had to, and didn’t take sacks. Defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons was chasing him like he wanted to end the play on every snap, going full speed, and Ward would slide left, slide right, or step back and find either Tony Pollard or Spears to convert and keep the drive moving.
There was one play where he had to double clutch, ducked under a pass rush, and hit Wan’Dale Robinson. I don’t know how he threw it. I don’t know how Robinson caught it. But it worked.
Ward’s five drives produced a touchdown, two made field goals and one missed field goal. The one drive that didn’t produce points came at the end of the half during what appeared to be a two-minute drill situation that was called dead at some point. Overall, it was a strong night for the franchise quarterback on a beautiful evening where the storm held off and the last training camp practice at Nissan Stadium delivered exactly the kind of energy the Titans wanted.
The connection between Cam Ward and this fan base is real. Now he has to turn those autograph lines and scrimmage highlights into wins this fall.
