The Florida Gators have been going through spring practice the last few weeks without quarterback DJ Lagway there to throw during practice. It's been a worrisome thing for the Gators over the course of the spring, especially since shoulder injuries can linger for a long time.
Even so, the hype train for Lagway hasn't stopped, as many around the country believe Lagway can be a real difference-maker for the Gators, potentially winning the Heisman Trophy this season.
DJ Lagway named best returning QB in college football
What he was able to do as a true freshman was special with a 6-1 record, and the only loss was against Georgia, where he injured his hamstring severely enough enough that he didn't run the football. He grew significantly in the pocket and led the Gators to a four-game winning streak to end the season.
His impressive end to the season has resonated with the national media, as CBS Sports' Bud Elliott named him the best returning quarterback in college football.
It's a really intriguing list from Elliott. There are four SEC quarterbacks on the list, including South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers, who is very similar to Lagway. You'll see similar lists across the board from analysts that will have Lagway up at the top, but one thing here is interesting.
There's no Arch Manning on the list.
He's one of the better quarterback recruits we've seen in some time, and the Texas Longhorns have set him up to be very successful when he takes over this September for Quinn Ewers. He started two games and played extensively in a third, but he showed some inconsistencies that leave things a little murky.
Whether you love Lagway or Manning, it's becoming clear that there is some separation between them for the time being.
