Christian Gonzalez was very surprised by the New England Patriots' latest roster move.

On Friday morning, Ja'Whaun Bentley posted a thank you note to the Patriots organization, alluding to the fact that he was getting released. The Boston Herald's Doug Kyed confirmed the report shortly after.

And star cornerback Christian Gonzalez was quick to react to the news on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Bruh what???," Gonzalez wrote

The Patriots roster has already undergone a major change under new head coach Mike Vrabel, and it's clear that he is ushering in a new era in New England.

Bentley was one of two players remaining from the Super Bowl championships after the Patriots released long-time captain and starting center David Andrews. Now, long snapper Joe Cardona is the only player to remain from that time.

It's clear that Gonzalez and the other players weren't expecting this move. It'll be interesting to hear Mike Vrabel's thought process on this decision.

Why the Patriots Released Ja'Whaun Bentley

The Patriots brought in two new linebackers in free agency this offseason – Robert Spillane and Jack Gibbens. They also used their tender on Christian Elliss, and while the Raiders did extend him an offer sheet, New England matched it.

Plus, Bentley's 2024 season was cut short after he suffered a a torn pectoral muscle, but he remained involved with the team and was around the facility during his recovery. ESPN's Mike Reiss further reported that he "said over the weekend he has been fully cleared recently after sustaining a torn pec Week 2 last season."

"New England ‼️ Thank You for Everything ‼️ It’s Been a Blessing 🖤🎱," Bentley wrote on X.

Bentley spent his whole career with the Patriots, joining the team in 2018 as a fifth round pick. Across his seven seasons, he has recorded 508 total tackles, 10.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, two interceptions, and 11 passes defended.
