CHESTNUT HILL, Mass – Before 19 players from four different schools took the field at Boston College on Monday for Pro Day, New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel took a moment to speak with the team.
It's clear that Eagles head coach Bill O'Brien is very excited to have Vrabel just a few towns over, and he gave some insight into how the Patriots head coach is already helping influence the young minds in Chestnut Hill.
"It helps us obviously at BC quite a bit to have Mike [Vrabel] and his staff right down the road. Great connection between myself, Mike, Coach Marrone, Coach McDaniels, and a lot of guys on the staff there," O'Brien told reporters at Boston College's Pro Day on Monday. "Mike spoke to our team this morning, which was fantastic, and we really appreciate that. It's going to be great to have those guys with the Patriots now and have that connection.
"(Vrabel) just gave his message of what it means to be a good teammate, what toughness is all about on the field but also mental toughness off the field. How you carry yourself off the field, being loyal to the program, being loyal to what the mission is," O'Brien added. "I know that Mike will put a premium on who comes into that locker room."
"It's a special opportunity to have someone like Mike come in and speak to the team. We've had some great speakers over the last year. Julian Edelman spoke to our team, Matt Ryan spoke to our team, and today Mike did," O'Brien continued. "And he just gave his message of what it means to be a good teammate, what toughness is all about on the field, but also mental toughness off the field in how you carry yourself off the field, being loyal to the program, being loyal to what the mission is. He covered all those things. And I really appreciate him for doing that."
While there were scouts from all 32 NFL teams in attendance, having an NFL head coach is something that certainly catches the players attention. And it means even more because Vrabel took the time to speak with some of them before such a big day.
