Jaire Alexander's time with the Green Bay Packers might be coming to an end, but the situation is undecided yet. During the NFL Combine, general manager Brian Gutekunst spoke with the media and shared an update on the matter.
First, Gutekunst praised Jaire's performance, admitting that the last few seasons have been frustrating for everyone involved because of his frequent injuries.
"He's been here a long time, he's been an elite player for a number of years. I think the past few years have been very frustrating for him and certainly for us too, just because you want players like that on the field consistently," Gutekunst said. "And when you can't be because of injuries, that's a tough thing on a player. I know he's doing everything he can to be out there, but the last few years haven't been where we wanted it to be only because of injury. But obviously, very, very talented player."
Asked if Jaire Alexander has shown willingness to stay in Green Bay, Gutekunst indicated how positive his locker room presence is, leaving the door open for a potential return.
"He's never said anything differently. He loves Green Bay, he's always got a lot of energy when he's in the building," Gutekunst added. "I think he's still around. So again, we'll work through that as we go through the offseason and see where that leads."
Contract
Jaire Alexander is slated to make $17.5 million in 2025, and it seems like this is the biggest issue at this point. Nothing of it is guaranteed, so the Packers will more than likely ask for a paycut if they want to keep the former All-Pro cornerback.
If Alexander projects to get more money elsewhere, the split might be inevitable. However, if he is willing to take less and maybe add some incentives based on playing time to make that back, a scenario where he stays is much more likely.
Jaire was Gutekunst’s first draft pick as the Packers general manager. Back in 2018, Gutey moved back from 14 to 27, and then up to 18 to select Alexander. He’s been a Second-Team All-Pro twice, in 2020 and 2022.
