The Miami Dolphins starting planning for this moment last offseason when they selected left tackle Patrick Paul in the second-round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Dolphins general manager Chris Grier revealed that star left tackle Terron Armstead is making a big salary sacrifice as he decides his future. He's reducing his salary to the minimum, which is a telling sign he'll surely retire this offseason.
Armstead originally signed with the Dolphins for five years and $75 million in the 2022 free agency period. He renegotiated his deal before this past season, reducing it down to a three-year, $38 million value. Further cutting his remaining money from $25.6 million to about $2.4 million over the next two years has become a cap-related move that New Orleans has exploited with a few players.
Armstead's departure from the Dolphins is significant. Even though he lacked durability, he was a Pro Bowl-caliber blocker when he was on the field. With Paul likely to take his spot and Austin Jackson expected back at right tackle, the interior of the offensive line remains a need.
Head coach Mike McDaniel added that the team is looking at veteran guards and center options to help alleviate their 2025 NFL Draft needs. But it's likely the team must address one guard spot or the center position rather early.
Miami has been hesitant to devote more than the minimum assets required to its offensive line, and it's backfired for decades. Owning the 13th overall pick, Miami could address the guard spot very early, but unless it's LSU's Will Campbell, they can wait until Day 2.
Day 2 options could include Emery Jones Jr., Tyler Booker, Tate Ratledge, Jonah Savaiinaea, Marcus Mbow, and Grey Zabel.
