It's been no secret who the New England Patriots' frontrunner has been for their head coaching opening.

And it seems they are one step closer to getting a deal done.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Patriots and Mike Vrabel are in the process of negotiating a deal to make him the next head coach in New England.

"Barring something unforeseen, the expectation remains that both sides will reach an agreement," Schultz wrote.

Vrabel interviewed with the Patriots on Thursday in Boston. The team has also interviewed Byron Leftwich, Pep Hamilton in person, along with Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson virtually. Lions' defensive coordinator, Aaron Glenn, turned down the interview request.

The former Tennessee Titans head coach brings a lot to the table. He has established connections across the league, and also is a former player, so he can relate to the locker room.

While Kraft publicly said he wanted to interview as many people as possible during this search, it's also known that they want to get this done sooner rather than later.

As the Athletic's Dianna Russini said on Saturday, "many around the league expect a decision this weekend."

So, now we just wait and see.
