The Indianapolis Colts took an uber-passive approach to free agency last year, with the team making their in-house options not only the top priority but basically the only priority. They didn't bring in a single veteran starter, and after a disappointing 2024 season, General Manager Chris Ballard has regrets.

They can't take that approach again, and one sports analyst is predicts that they will sign one of the most coveted free agents set to hit the market.

Near the end of his show "The Herd," Collin Cowherd made a prediction about the Colts' offseason. Unprompted, he stated that he predicts Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold will sign with the Colts in free agency.

Darnold is coming off the best year of his career during his first season with the Vikings. In 2025, he threw for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions and completed 66.7% of his passes. Whether or not he will return to the Vikings in 2025 is considered up in the air. Even after a great season, the team has their 2024 first-round pick, J.J. McCarthy, there waiting for his opportunity, and Darnold's lackluster end to the year has left a sour taste in some fans' mouths in Minnesota. After a strong season, he finished arguably his two worst performances of the year during the team's most important games. In Week 18 and the Wild Card round, Darnold combined for 411 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Even after his poor end to the season, Darnold is looked at by most as the top QB set to hit free agency. And with so many teams having needs at QB, it's safe to say he is in for the biggest payday of his young career. Which is precisely why I would be shocked to see the Colts win the Darnold sweepstakes. I personally don't think he is a player the team will even put much effort into pursuing. Going out and finding a viable backup who can compete with Anthony Richardson in training camp should be a priority. However, the type of contract Darnold is expected to warrant would point towards him heading into training camp with his new team as the presumed starter. I doubt that's the approach the Colts elect to take with Richardson and their offense. So, I guess we will have to wait and see if this take by Cowherd will end up in the segment "Where Colin was Right" or "Where Colin was Wrong."
