Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has his eyes set on Super Bowl LIX, but he's also not out of the race to become league MVP for the 2024 NFL season.

Entering Week 14 of the 2024 NFL season, Mahomes sits considerably lower than others in the MVP odds at DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars. There's no denying that, to this point in the 2024 NFL regular season, Mahomes hasn't performed up to his own statistical standard.

The back-to-back Super Bowl champion got off to a rough start in the first six games of the season, completing just over 67% of his passes for 1,389 passing yards, six touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He's improved considerably over the last six games, with a 69% completion rating, nearly 1,600 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and three interceptions.

There's still plenty of time left for Mahomes to prove that he's worthy of the esteemed award this season. . .

How can Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes make a push for his third career MVP award?

The Chiefs are fast approaching the most difficult stretch of the 2024 NFL season. Not only are they slated to face four playoff teams in their last five weeks of the season, but they need to keep pace to maintain a hold on the No. 1 seed in the AFC conference with the Buffalo Bills hot on their trail.

If Mahomes can uplift his team to victory, especially during the stretch where they play three games in a span of eleven days. He'll have a strong case to make that he's deserving of the league MVP award. There's reason to believe that with the upcoming addition of free agent LT D.J. Humphries to the starting lineup, performance could improve considerably down the stretch.

What would Mahomes' numbers have to look like in order to convince the public that he's the league MVP for the 2024 NFL season? Replicating the first four games of his first season as a starter would certainly do the trick. Mahomes threw for over 1,200 passing yards, 14 passing TDs, no interceptions, and had a passer rating of 121.7, all while boasting a team record of 4-0. That might be a little unrealistic for this stretch of games, though.

In my eyes, it'll take three things from Mahomes to skyrocket up the MVP leaderboards once again. It starts with playing clean, turnover-free football. After his start to the season, he desperately needs that down the stretch. Next, he needs to create some of the signature explosive passing plays that he's been known for in the past. Connecting with rookie WR Xavier Worthy on some deep shots would be a good start. Finally, it comes down to winning games. If his performance ensures that the team keeps ahead of Josh Allen and the Bills in the race for the No. 1 seed, it'll be hard to argue that he's not the league MVP.

There's also something to be said about persevering through early-season struggles to finish strong and play your best football this time of the year. We all know the Chiefs haven't played their best football yet, and should they suddenly put it all together, things could look pretty scary for the rest of the NFL.
