Notre Dame football is on a bye week, but Irish fans should be keeping close eyes on the college football landscape this weekend. This Irish program has a clear path to the college football playoffs. If they win out, they will be in the big dance.
Outside of winning out, the biggest conversation concerning other teams will center around where they would be seeded. There are several games that Notre Dame fans should absolutely have some rooting interest in this season. Here are the games to have on your radar.
Louisville at (11) Clemson
This one should be pretty self explanatory but Louisville pulling off an upset would be a nice boost to Notre Dame’s strength of schedule. But the other bonus is that Clemson is right around where the Irish are ranked, which could create nice separation if the Tigers lose. Louisville winning would be so beneficial for Notre Dame’s playoff seeding, which is why Irish fans should be keeping a close eye on this game.
(4) Ohio State at (3) Penn State
Both Ohio State and Penn State are ranked above Notre Dame, so naturally someone is going to lose and move down a bit. If the Buckeyes lose, then that would be two losses on the season. There’s almost no way you keep them above Notre Dame in that instance. That also could make it difficult to make the playoffs barring some chaos down the stretch. I think most Notre Dame fans would rather see the Nittany Lions in the playoffs than the Buckeyes.
(10) Texas A&M at South Carolina
It’s pretty simple, Texas A&M continuing to win helps Notre Dame big time. They are the best win for the Irish by a substantial margin right now. Beating a top-10 SEC school on the road is a great victory. If the Aggies somehow make it to the SEC championship game, then that has a chance to be one of the better wins anyone would have on their resume all season.
Air Force at (21) Army
The last ranked victory Notre Dame might have on their schedule is Army in a couple of weeks. The Black Knights are off to an undefeated start, and continuing to win would be huge for the Irish. If they drop a game to a team like Air Force, that would be a major bummer. Notre Dame needs them to be undefeated when they face off.
