FOXBOROUGH, Mass – For Drake Maye, getting named the New England Patriots starting quarterback is "something you dream of."

However, there is one aspect of this opportunity that wasn't as fun.

And that's taking the job from Jacoby Brissett.

"Jacoby, he's the ideal teammate, the ideal guy to be in the room with as a quarterback," Maye told reporters on Wednesday. "I think the biggest thing is you hate it for him."

The rookie quarterback saw Brissett get up each time he was hit and continued to keep the team motivated despite their struggles.

"I think Jacoby fought his butt off, got up every time he was getting hit. Not only that, he just kept that mindset of, ‘hey, it's going to be the next play. Got this drive coming,’ Maye added. "Seeing him on the sideline, it was the positive vibes he kept and brought to this team and will still bring to this team.

"He's a great mentor, a great friend, and I was trying to do everything I can to help him, and I'm sure he'll do the same."

The two were made aware of this decision on Monday night, with the news being leaked on Tuesday. Mayo officially told the team on Wednesday morning.

"But I told the team this morning that in the same way that the full weight of the organization was behind Jacoby at the time, I expect the same thing, the full weight of the organization to be behind Drake no matter what," Mayo said.

The head coach also took a moment to praise Brissett for how he's handled everything.

"I would also say, for a guy like that to be voted as a captain in this situation and continue to be very supportive of Drake Maye, I tip my hat to Jacoby for having that egoless mentality," Mayo explained. "So, it was solely my decision to make this choice. I had a conversation one-on-one with Jacoby. I had a conversation with Drake. We're all on board.

"I would also say Jacoby is a warrior, and he took the news very well, like a professional, like you would expect from a guy like that.

He was also asked if this changes Brissett's status as a team captain going forward.

"Not at all. Not at all," he revealed. "I expressed that to Jacoby in our one-on-one that his leadership was not just what he did on the field, but also off the field. My expectation, and he agreed, was that he would continue to be a leader on our football team."

It's clear that the Patriots quarterback room is close and they all just want each other to succeed. Brissett was the perfect mentor for the team to bring in this offseason to help Maye develop, and it's safe to say he will continue to be that way throughout the remainder of the season.
