The issues on the offensive line have been very apparent for the New England Patriots throughout the start of the 2024 NFL season. And there is one position that presents the biggest problem.
The Patriots have yet to establish a true starting left tackle, having lost Trent Brown in free agency to the Cincinnati Bengals. They brought in Chukwuma Okorafor, but after he was benched in the season opener, he left the team. And then it was Vederian Lowe who got the start and has arguably played the best, but he is sidelined due to an injury. Lastly, in the third game, rookie Caedan Wallace lined up with the others.
But heading into the Week 4 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, an interesting development has taken place at practice for New England this past week.
Despite being on the field with the team all week, Lowe did not practice. And then Wallace was limited all three days.
So when the starting five lined up during the opening minutes of practice on Wednesday, Demontrey Jacobs slotted in at left tackle.
Jacobs started his career with the Denver Broncos in 2023, signing as an undrafted free agent. He spent all season on the practice squad, along with 2024 training camp. However, as part of final roster cuts, the Broncos waived him.
But the Patriots didn't hesitate, claiming him off waivers the very next day.
However, while they will have one new addition to the line, they get one starter back. The team has also ruled out Michael Jordan, who has been filling in for Sidy Sow at left guard.
But Sow returned to practice this past week and all signs point to him playing on Sunday.
So if things were to stick, here's what the starting offensive line might look like:
LT: Demontrey Jacobs
LG: Sidy Sow
C: David Andrews
RG: Layden Robinson
RT: Mike Onwenu
