The Oregon Ducks are 10-0 for the first time since 2012, and a huge reason why was the performance of their defensive line on Saturday night's 39-18 victory over Maryland.
The offense sputtered at times while their leading wide receiver Tez Johnson is out injured. The defensive line, featuring Jordan Burch, Matayo Uiagalelei, Derrick Harmon, and others, was not phased. They took it upon themselves to wreck the game for the Maryland offense.
The stats for the dudes up front deserve to be listed out.
- DE Jordan Burch Burch: 4 pressures, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, 2 batted passes, 3 stops
- OLB Teitum Tuioti: 4 pressures, 3 tackles, 2 stops
- DT Jamaree Caldwell: 2 pressures, 2 batted passes, 1 stop
- DE Matayo Uiagalelei: 3 pressures, 2 hits, 1 batted pass
- DT Derrick Harmon: 3 pressures, 2 hits, 2 stops
As a team, Oregon generated a whopping 22 pressures, 1 sack, 5 hits, 6 batted passes, and 1 forced fumble. Constant pressure from the defensive front also led to Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards Jr throwing two interceptions while completing only 50% of his passes for 206 yards.
The defensive front is positively menacing. Add in the fact that the Ducks have an athletic and opportunistic defensive backfield and linebackers that can fly downhill and tackle, and the Oregon defense is looking like they have what it takes to compete for a National Championship. Winning the line of scrimmage is crucial at any level of football, and the Ducks front has what it takes to hang with anyone. Burch, who is now back and healthy, gives them yet another incredible weapon up front to get after opposing quarterbacks.
