The Green Bay Packers are on the search for a new defensive coordinator. Joe Barry is out at DC, and they are on the look for an improvement for that side of the ball.
On Friday, an intriguing name will get a chance to discuss the open position with Green Bay.
The Packers are interviewing former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley for their vacant defensive coordinator position, according to Dianna Russini.
The interest should come as no shocker. Staley has proven to be an effective defensive coordinator in the past, even amid his struggles as an NFL head coach.
With the Los Angeles Rams in 2020, his defense ranked 1st in points and total yards allowed in the NFL.
That's why he was sought after during the following offseason. The Chargers chose to hire him at head coach, but it did not work out.
The Chargers were not impressive defenses in their seasons under Staley as HC. Their run defense was inconsistent, and their pass defense was amongst the worst in the NFL in 2023. The dominance was not nearly on the same level as his Rams squad.
We've seen Staley have legit success in one season with some star players with the Rams, and his years with the Chargers proved quite the opposite. Some players had a flawed relationship with Staley, and there was miscommunication on many occasions between his staff and his players.
Staley has been coaching in the NFL since 2017.
Overall, the Packers may want to look elsewhere. Staley is getting a shot to interview, regardless, though.
