New Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn made a splash move over the weekend by adding Kliff Kingsbury to his coaching staff as offensive coordinator.
Naturally, adding Kingsbury to the mix added fuel to the fire to one of the biggest questions about the Commanders' offseason: Could they land USC quarterback Caleb Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft?
After all, Williams and Kingsbury have a relationship after the coach spent 2023 with the Trojans as Senior Offensive Analyst. On Monday, USC head coach Lincoln Riley claimed on Good Morning Football that the two "have a great relationship. It was awesome for Caleb to have Kliff."
However, a reunion like this is easier said than done when you're not playing Madden. The Commanders own the second overall pick, not the first, which means their pick will hinge on whatever the Chicago Bears do beforehand. It all seems like a big mystery right now as many wonder what the Bears will do and if there's a chance for Washington to trade up to get on the clock before anybody else.
What was the word at the Senior Bowl about Caleb Williams and the No. 1 pick?
A to Z Sports' own Destin Adams got to work in Mobile, Alabama, to learn what NFL sources are saying about the huge 2024 offseason ahead. Sources told A to Z Sports that the Bears are expected to sit tight.
"I was told that many around the league strongly believe that the Bears will not trade the top pick and target a QB to replace Fields and that QB most likely will be USC's Caleb Williams," wrote Adams on his Senior Bowl takeaways.
Talk about a bucket of cold water being thrown at the rising hype about potentially seeing Williams in the burgundy and gold next year. With that being said, that doesn't mean the Commanders won't get a solid signal-caller for 2024 and beyond. And it certainly shouldn't take anything away from Quinn landing Kingsbury, who has proven to be a great offensive mind.
Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels are both very strong prospects that should make Commanders football all the more interesting in late April.
Commanders reportedly called Bill Belichick before offering head coaching job to Dan Quinn
Guess it wasn’t a done deal.
