FOXBOROUGH, Mass – It has been quite the start for Christian Gonzalez. 

The New England Patriots cornerback was awarded the Defensive Rookie of the Month for September, and two players had smiles on their faces when asked about Gonzalez's first great accolade. 

"Very deserving. He's always been a do-your-job type of player. since the first day, we've seen how good he was. I said it before, he's one of those solid assassins," Deatrich Wise Jr. said. "Very happy for him. Looking forward to seeing what he does this week."

Gonzalez is known to be a very quiet, but he says enough with his efforts on the field. And Matthew Judon was also asked about the rookie cornerback, and couldn't say enough nice things about his fellow teammate.

"Just the skill and the poise he plays with at cornerback for a young player is kind of insane," Judon said. "He got a long way and it's just one of the many personal accolades that he's gonna get for himself." 

"He is a player that has a unique skill set, unique talent, unique potential and all that range and speed and stuff like that," Judon added. "So me, I have nothing to do with that, but just encourage him and walk him along his little journey."

Gonzalez was drafted by the Patriots in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and the star out of Oregon has not disappointed, making big plays for the team in each and every game.

In his NFL debut Gonzalez sacked Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Jalen Hurts and followed it up by interception Miami Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa in Week 2. 

"That's difficult," Judon said about what Gonzalez has already accomplished. "There are corners in this league that have never got close to the quarterback. For him to get that in his first week and then to get a pick which was a huge point for us… For him, that's just wonderful." 

"He's going to make so many more plays in this league and that's just one of many," he added. 

The cornerback room has taken a serious hit during the first few weeks of the season, with many injuries keeping players sidelined. Because of that, Gonzalez has had to stepped up and been tasked with having to cover some best of the best receivers around the league during games.

Gonzalez has already looked solid this season and this latest achievement will only serve as additional inspiration for the rookie. Let's see what else he can do this season.
