Former NFL safety Sergio Brown was reportedly taken into custody in connection with his mother's death, CNN reports.

Brown's mother was found dead in September with assault injuries behind her home in Chicago. Her death was ruled a homicide and authorities were unable to find or get in contact with Brown.

Brown is being charged with first-degree murder.

The former NFL safety spent seven seasons in the NFL, originally signing with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He also had stints with the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Buffalo Bills.

His mother was found after family members told police that they couldn't get in contact with her or Brown. He remained missing following her death, with relatives taking to social media to ask for help locating him.

He was found in Mexico, and was deported and taken into custody in San Diego after an arrest warrant was issued in Illinois.
