The New England Patriots have their new quarterback and on Friday afternoon, he took his first steps on the field at Gillette Stadium.
Maye took a moment to look around, seeing his name on the Jumbotron and the large crowd of media members waiting for him. So when he took the jersey and posed with Robert Kraft, it all became real.
While the jersey he was given had a No. 1 on it, the third overall pick revealed that's not what he will be wearing when the season begins. Instead, he will be taking a number that he's familiar with.
"I think I'm going to stay with 10," Maye told reporters on Friday. "It's just the number that I wore in high school and college and just keep it the same."
He even made a funny joke about one number he had no intention of ever taking.
"As long as it ain't 12," Maye said with a laugh. "Hard to fill those shoes
And when he got to saw his locker, there was already a No. 10 jersey waiting for him.
Mac Jones previously wore No. 10 for the Patriots, but New England's 2021 first-round pick was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason.
And Eliot Wolf revealed on Thursday night immediately after the pick that they knew Maye was there guy for a while now and were comfortable bringing him in.
There are no guarantees that he will be the starter once September rolls around, but his attitude and willingness to learn make him the perfect fit for this new beginning in New England.
