The San Francisco 49ers have achieved one free agency goal, securing at least some insurance for starting quarterback Brock Purdy.

Both of their 2023 backups, Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen, were scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on Wednesday when the new league year begins and were allowed to negotiate with other teams as of the start of the negotiating period at 12pm ET on Monday.

But Allen is no longer on the open market, with the 49ers re-signing him to a one-year deal, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Allen did not play a snap last year as he served as the emergency quarterback throughout the season.

Depending on what happens with Darnold, he could become the number two for the 2024 season. It's unclear whether Darnold will be back, and the 49ers may well look to draft a young backup quarterback from a deep and experienced class at the game's most important position.

For now, though, the 49ers at least have one backup to Purdy. It won't generate a lot of attention, but it's an important job ticked off the checklist.
