The Detroit Lions initial 53-man roster is finally here. While it's expected that there will be some changes, we at least have an idea of what this team will look like when they take on the Kansas City Chiefs next week. Here's 5 things that stood out the most.

There’s more moves coming

This is not going to be the Lions final roster. there’s just no way they go into the season with two running backs and seven edge rushers. There’s going to be some moves beyond the Lions looking for a kicker. Look for the team to look in the free agent market, but also look for them to trade someone away for a running back. Possibly one of the seven edge rushers.

The Kicker Situation

This is more than likely not what the Lions are going to go into the season with. Riley Patterson struggled in the preseason. He missed a 53 yard attempt and an extra point. Now the Lions are reportedly doing some work in the trade market to find their new kicker. The problem is that some of the kickers that were available when that news came out have already been traded. Both Nick Folk and Will Lutz are gone. There’s some other options, but those guys might have been the top ones. We’ll see where the Lions go with this probably by the end of the week.

Cutting Corners

We knew that the Lions were going to have some serious problems when it came down to cutting players from the secondary. What we didn’t know was that the Lions would basically cut everyone we thought they’d have a hard time with. Chase Lucas and Starling Thomas seemed like locks to make the Lions roster. They’re both gone for now and are two guys that are expected to possibly be claimed on waivers. Lucas especially. Steven Gilmore was just undeniable. This secondary is going to be fun to watch. If the Lions can get both these guys back on the practice squad, they’re going to be relatively deep.

Who’s returning kicks on this team?

David Reginek-USA TODAY Sports

The Lions tried out a lot of different guys at return man. They then cut them all. They have a punt returner in Kalif Raymond, but you have to wonder what they plan to do at kick returner. The Lions are short on running backs and seem short a man at receiver. Like we said, there could be some more moves coming. A guy that can fill those roles and this one would help.

Meet 2023 Detroit Lions initial 53-Man Roster

It's over Detroit Lions fans. The cut down period is done and we now know what the Lions 53 man roster is going to look like going into the 2023 NFL season. At least we know what it looks like now. Things could still change throughout the week. Let's waste no time and see what […]
