The New England Patriots have made a move that many saw coming.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that the Patriots are signing Bailey Zappe to the 53-man roster.

And in a corresponding move, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport further reported that New England is releasing Matt Corral.

It appears things are back to how they started with Zappe set to serve as the back up for Mac Jones in Sunday's season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Throughout the preseason, Zappe was seen as the clear choice to be Jones' back up, but the Patriots made a surprise move on cutdown day, waiving the quarterback. No other team elected to pick him up and Zappe along with undrafted rookie Malik Cunningham were signed to the practice squad.

New England then brought in former Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Corral who took the open spot on the 53-man roster.

And on Friday, Bill Belichick would not name a back up quarterback just yet.

"That's a decision we'll have to finalize here today," Belichick said. "I think it's a consideration. Bailey (Zappe) certainly has the advantage on experience and time in the system and all that. We'll see how that plays out. We have a couple different options there, so we'll try to make the best one."

With Corral being absent from Friday's media attended portion of practice and later appearing on the injury report, it is clear that a decision had been made.

Zappe is coming off an impressive rookie season, having started the season as the third-string quarterback before earning the backup spot. Jones was injured and unable to play for a few weeks, with Zappe leading the team to two wins in his first two starts. While Jones returned in Week 7, he clearly struggled in his first game back, with Zappe sent in to replace him.

However, the young quarterback struggled in the preseason, but has seemingly proven himself in a short amount of time.
