Across his 11 years with the New England Patriots, Julian Edelman made many memories… and some enemies along the way apparently.
The former Super Bowl MVP appeared on the New Height podcast hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce and was asked about the worst fanbase he encountered.
"The Buffalo Bills," Edelman said without hesitation. "Bills f—— hated us. I have never been flipped off by the widest range of ages, from people from three years old to 90 years old after going into Old Orchard (Highmark Stadium) and beating the Bills."
"It was fun. They really hated us though."
However, that wasn't the only story Edelman shared, recalling one interaction he had with Randy Moss during his rookie season.
“He used to call me ‘Edel-nut,'” Edelman said. “‘Hey Edel-nut, get my hot tub about 103 and get my Gatorade.’
"You have metal tubs and hot tubs. He never wanted to go in the regular hot tub. He had to have — it was like menthol, rubbing alcohol in there," Edelman added." And he’d be like, ‘Edel-nut, go get my towel, my Gatorade and make that hot tub 103-102. Don’t f— it up.'”
Moss certainly did not give Edelman an easy time when he arrived in New England, but the young receiver was just happy to be learning from some of the best in the league.
But there was one specific lesson he has always remembered.
“This one time Randy, it was like the day before Christmas and we had to work. We had a game on Christmas or something, and Randy was talking to his mom. I just walked by. I was like, ‘Hey Randy, tell mamma Moss I said merry Christmas.’ He goes, ‘Edel-nut, when I’m talking to my m—– f——- mom, you shut the f— up,’ Edelman explained. "I walked away and didn’t make eye contact. I was so scared. I was a rookie. He’s like, ‘Don’t you f—— talk to me when I’m talking to my mom.’ But he’d always love me up, too.”
The moral of the story: don't interrupt Moss while he's on the phone with his mother.
Edelman also had some interesting interactions with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick remember his first year on the team. And as expected, Belichick was very a strict coach.
“There’s a principle, you just kind of stay away, don’t make eye contact, (Belichick) might ask you a question,” Edelman said. “I was so terrified of that dude.”
While current rookies are provided with books that have all the players names and numbers so they can become familiar with their team, Edelman recalled that it was not the case for him. At one point during rookie camp, Belichick quizzed Edelman on the other players on the team, specifically asking him if he could name one player who was photographed in the facility.
Edelman could not answer, and Belichick certainly let him have it.
"After that, every rookie went got names of everyone, from all the cleaning staff, the cafeteria people. He'd ask you everything," Edelman said. "
Belichick is certainly known for his mannerisms and Edelman knows that all too well.
“F—— Belichick,” Edelman said. “I’m still scared of him.”
“He’s got a dry sense of humor,” Edelman added. “A lot of guys don’t know if they can laugh at his jokes. But he does say a lot of funny (things). He’s funny and he’s fun when it’s okay to be fun.”
