DL Jalen Carter Scouting Report

Carter was one of the top recruits in his class coming out of high school, generating buzz as an outstanding multi-sport athlete who was the star of a solid Apopka High School football team while also placing second in the state on the bench press as a weight lifter. 

He attended the University of Georgia, where he recorded 14 tackles (three for loss) as a true freshman alongside two future first-round defensive linemen. He won two National Championships with the Bulldogs, and was a key part of what many consider to be the most dominant defensive front in the history of college football. 

Over the course of his collegiate career, he earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2021 while earning first-team All-SEC honors in 2022, capping it off with Consensus AP All-American honors the same year.

His senior season, Carter racked up 32 tackles, seven TFLs, three sacks, and two forced fumbles; this was down slightly from his junior season, largely due to injuries that have since healed. The six-foot three-inch, 315-pound lineman’s 7.05 NFL Prospect Grade projects him to be a future Pro-Bowler at the next level.

On talent and physical makeup, Carter is a sure-fire top-five overall selection; however, the questions surrounding Carter have nothing to do with his ability on the field. He was charged with reckless driving and racing on March 1 in connection with a fatal car accident that claimed the life of a fellow UGA player and a staffer. He later entered a plea of no contest and was sentenced to a year of probation, a $1,000 fine, 80 hours of community service, and instructed to complete a driving course.

While it seems Carter is moving past this particular incident, there have been questions surrounding his maturity even before the accident. Still, it is unlikely to affect his draft stock very much: Carter’s talent is too good for a team not to take a chance on him.
