The New England Patriots are losing one of their top defenders from the 2023 season.

Per ESPN's Mike Reiss, Linebacker Mack Wilson has reportedly agreed to a three-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport added that it is a $12.75 million deal worth up to $15 million.

And despite him leaving, it turns out the Patriots did try and get him to stay

MassLive's Mark Daniels reports that the Cardinals beat out the Patriots offer, but it was very close.

In January, Wilson spoke exclusively with A to Z Sports and expressed that he would definitely be open to remaining in New England.

“Yeah, definitely. I would definitely love to come back,” Wilson said. "My guy Mayo, obviously, and Coach Bill honestly. A great organization… Excited to see how this team bounces back next year.”

And it is Mayo who will be leading the charge. This was a move that Wilson has always been on board with.

“It’s really, like I say, second to none. I mean obviously you have coaches who coach the game and obviously played the game maybe when he was younger, but having a guy like Mayo, who played the game at a high level," Wilson said. "(He) was drafted first round, was Pro Bowl, high accolades, things like that. Been there. Same organization and same practice fields, same locker room. It just hits different honestly. I’ve just been blessed to be able to be coached by him for two years. Learned a lot from him. And hopefully this is not the last time I’m being coached by him.”

But he will not be around for the new Patriots head coach's first season.

And he took to social media after the news was officially released.

The Patriots are scheduled to play against the Cardinals next season in an away game matchup, so they will face Wilson on the opposite side of the field.
