Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are turning a lot of heads with their efforts on the recruiting trail this offseason. The 2026 recruiting class has been a massive success, especially on the defensive line. Assistant Coach Al Washington has put together an outstanding group, including five-star pass rusher Rodney Dunham and high upside EDGE rusher Ebenezer Ewetade.
In the 2027 recruiting class, Notre Dame once again has their eyes on another East Coast five-star defensive end in Chesterfield (Va.) Lloyd C. Bird star Chris Whitehead. Considered one of the top overall defenders in the entire 2027 class, Whitehead is set to visit South Bend this season. According to Rivals vice president of recruiting Steve Wiltfong, the star pass rusher will be heading to Notre Dame for their battle against USC on October 18th.
Whitehead is considered to be a top-50 overall recruit by every major recruiting platform. On the 247 Sports Composite rankings, the Virginia native currently ranks a five-star, the No. 21 overall player, No. 5 EDGE, and No. 1 player in the state of Virginia in the 2027 recruiting class.
A long list of impressive suitors have been pursuing Whitehead heavily. Some of his top offers so far include the Fighting Irish, Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Tennessee, Miami, Texas A&M, Penn State, Florida State, South Carolina, SMU, NC State, Maryland, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Rutgers, and Virginia among others.
As a sophomore, Whitehead managed to play in only nine games, but his presence was felt in a big way. The 6-5, 210-pound pass rusher managed to record 30 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks. Whitehead also intercepted a pass, forced three fumbles, and recovered three more.
With such high demand, landing Whitehead isn’t going to be easy for the Fighting Irish. If this staff under Coach Freeman has proven anything, however, I wouldn’t count them out. That’s especially true if Whitehead has a great visit during the USC game. Whitehead has the high upside as a pass rusher that the Fighting Irish need to continue landing. There is an argument that he has as much upside as any defensive end in the 2027 recruiting class.
