A fair question to make after the Green Bay Packers pulled off a major trade to acquire Micah Parsons is if the team was one player away from being a Super Bowl contender. Well, this is probably the wrong approach to the situation.
Yes, giving up two first-round picks and Kenny Clark is significant. Giving a defensive player $47 million a year is huge. But not only is Parsons a great player, he plays at a premium position and has the transformative power to change a unit.

You might argue that the Packers don’t have the horses to create the best defense in football, but they do now with Parsons. Defensive tackle becomes an issue without Kenny Clark, but the team still has Devonte Wyatt and Karl Brooks, among others. Edgerrin Cooper is ascending after a stellar rookie season, and the backend has First-Team All-Pro Xavier McKinney.
The cornerback room is still an issue, but the Packers are now betting on two factors. First, the weak-link approach—Green Bay doesn’t have a star at the position, but several capable starters. Second, creating quick pressure is the most effective way of minimizing secondary issues.
Throughout his first four NFL seasons, Parsons had 330 pressures — Rashan Gary has had 280 in six seasons. Since 2021, not even Myles Garrett (320), Trey Hendrickson (299), and T.J. Watt (232) have had as many pressures.
Micah Parsons was the 12th overall pick in 2021. Since then, he has had at least 10 sacks in each of his four seasons—including as a rookie, when he played the majority of his snaps as an off-ball linebacker. Last year, he had 12 sacks and 12 tackles for loss in 13 games.
The Packers made a huge investment, but the front office and the coaching staff know the type of impact that a transcendent player at such an impactful position can make on the entire roster.
