Packers get the kind of injury news that will have fans buzzing before ‘Sunday Night Football’ against the Steelers
First-round rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden is officially listed as questionable to play against the Steelers due to a hip injury.
Green Bay Packers fans will have the first opportunity to watch Christian Watson and Matthew Golden play football together. A day after the Packers activated Watson from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that first-round rookie Matthew Golden is also expected to play.
Golden is listed as questionable
On Friday, Golden had been added to the injury report due to a hip injury and officially listed as questionable to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers on “Sunday Night Football.” However, it’s not that serious, and he will be available.
That was the most likely scenario because the Packers hadn’t elevated any wide receivers from the practice squad for gameday on Saturday, an early indication that Golden was healthy enough.
Wide receiver room
Jayden Reed (shoulder) is still on the injured reserve, and Dontayvion Wicks (calf) was ruled out on Friday. Without them, the wide receiver room against the Steelers has Romeo Doubs, Golden, Watson, Malik Heath, and Savion Williams.
Cornerback Bo Melton, converted from the wide receiver position, has had four offensive snaps this season and could also play there if needed.
Early impact
Golden is second on the Packers in snaps (63.25% of the offensive plays), just behind Doubs. Through his first six NFL games, the first-round pick has had 23 targets, 18 receptions, and 249 receiving yards, in addition to eight rushing attempts for 45 yards.
Golden was the first wide receiver selected by the Packers in the first round of the draft since 2002. Watson was the 34th selection in 2022, the previously highest-drafted receiver on the Packers in the same period. Now, both will play together for the first time — and just like fans, quarterback Jordan Love couldn’t be more excited about what they can produce on the field.
