Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker received some unfortunate news on Tuesday afternoon.

According to multiple reports, the Carolina Panthers released Hooker from their practice squad just before the 4:00 p.m. ET NFL trade deadline.

Hendon Hooker’s time with the Carolina Panthers was short-lived

Hooker, a third-round selection by the Detroit Lions in the 2023 NFL Draft, was signed by the Panthers shortly before the start of the 2025 season. The Lions released the former Vol near the end of the preseason.

The Greensboro, NC, native never appeared in a regular season game for the Panthers.

Hooker, in fact, has attempted just nine passes since entering the NFL (all with the Lions in 2024). He’ll now look for a new home after failing to earn a key role in Detroit and in Carolina.

The former Tennessee standout will turn 28 in January.
