Report names a big concern that ‘some within’ Tennessee’s football program have about the Vols’ practices this year
There’s a concern that some within Tennessee’s football program have about the Vols’ practices.
One of the Tennessee Vols’ most glaring issues this season has been tackling. UT led the SEC with 98 missed tackles entering last weekend’s game against the Oklahoma Sooners.
Far too often this season, opponents have easily broken tackles against Tennessee, frequently resulting in big gains.
One reason for the Vols’ poor tackling this season could be the lack of physicality in practices.
On3’s Chris Low reported on Tuesday that “some within” Tennessee’s football program feel like practices aren’t “physical enough.”
“One source told On3 that one of the biggest concerns among some within the program is that the practices throughout the entire year, not just the season, aren’t physical enough and that there’s not enough contact,” wrote Low.
Low also noted that the source told On3, “You gotta hit and do enough of it if you’re going to be good at it, both tackling and blocking.”
Physical practices aren’t as easy as they used to be in college football
Tennessee’s practices are closed during the season, so there isn’t a lot of information available on how those practices are structured.
I do believe, though, that it’s harder than ever to have “physical practices” due to the difficulty programs face in building depth in the current era of college football.
You gotta be healthy to win games. And Tennessee, as much as any program in the SEC, has dealt with numerous injuries throughout this season. That almost certainly makes it difficult to practice with the physicality that the coaching staff would likely prefer.
Unfortunately, there’s no easy solution to this problem. It’s something that all college football programs are dealing with. Ultimately, college football teams have to rely on some good injury luck to truly put a championship team on the field each Saturday.
