Over the past few years, many professional athletes and coaches have been suspended or fired for sports gambling violations.
In 2025 alone we have witnessed major betting scandals in both the NBA and MLB. In 2023 nine NFL players were disciplined for various gambling incidents, but there have been none since.
The league changed its policy that year to where a player who bets on their own team will be suspended for at least two years, and players who bet on any NFL games at all will be suspended at least one year.
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes shares his opinion on sports gambling
While speaking to the media on Wednesday, Mahomes was asked if he thinks about any of the sports gambling scandals that have occurred, and whether or not the NFL has the appropriate safeguards in place to prevent them.
“The NFL and NFPA tell us all the different rules that you can and can’t do,” Mahomes said. “I just stay away from it. “I don’t want to put myself in that position. Your life so great, why mess with it? To me, it gets weird sometimes when you have fans talking about it, because you’re just trying to go out there and live your life and play the game.
“Sometimes they get really attached, even more than a regular fan, because they have money on the line. From me to them, I would just say don’t do anything that you can’t recuperate or live without. It’s a crazy world we live in these days, seeing all this stuff happen. But, I think you just focus on football and focus on the sport that you love and why you’re here, and you don’t have to worry about all the other stuff.”
Hopefully more people who are involved in sports organizations adopt Mahomes’ mindset on gambling. It is continually growing throughout the country, especially with pro sports leagues partnering with various betting platforms. Kansas City has had its own scandal, dating back to when the Chiefs won their first Super Bowl during the 1969-70 season.
