When it comes to the future of the running back position, Notre Dame football is in a great spot. There aren’t many college football programs that could lose a duo like Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price in the same offseason and still put together a tremendous room. That’s exactly what head coach Marcus Freeman and running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider have returning in 2026. You can do much worse than a group of Aneyas Williams, Nolan James Jr., Kedren Young, Javian Osborne, and Jonaz Walton.

With Seider’s reputation as a recruiter, there is also no reason to believe that the cupboard won’t stay well stocked for the foreseeable future. In the 2027 recruiting class, the Fighting Irish have their eyes on several talented running backs to potentially add. That includes four-star Waco (Texas) Midway running back Lathan Whisenton.

One of the top playmakers from the Lone Star State, Whisenton has quickly become a target to know for Notre Dame. The talented runner will be making his first trip to South Bend this spring, and it could end up being a very, very important position. He is scheduled to check out Notre Dame the weekend of March 21, barring something changing.

Notre Dame is pursuing a couple of other talented running backs, including Arizona star Noah Roberts and David Segarra III, who is also visiting campus that weekend. It’ll be interesting to see if Whisenton becomes a top priority for the Irish of not. That visit could tell us a lot about where things ultimately stand.

Lathan Whisenton’s recruiting background

Depending on which major recruiting platform you frequent, Whisenton is viewed as a three-star player by some, and a four-star by others. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the Texas star currently ranks as the No. 295 overall player, the No. 22 running back, and the No. 42 in the state of Texas for the 2027 recruiting class. The Rivals ranking has Whisenton pegged as the No. 128 overall player in the class.

Despite those inconsistent rankings, Whisenton has a healthy offer list currently. Some of the top programs that have offered him include the Fighting Irish, Texas, Michigan, Oregon, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Auburn, Florida State, Texas Tech, Missouri, TCU, Baylor, Houston, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin, SMU, Northwestern, and Cal, among others.

As a junior in 2025, Whisenton put together a fantastic season. In 11 games played, the 5-11, 194-pound runner managed to rush for 1,502 yards and 24 touchdowns on 165 carries, an average of 9.1 yards per carry. Whisenton also hauled in an additional 10 receptions for 102 yards, while also contributing as a kick returner for Waco Midway.
