NFL Draft expert predicts Commanders to make controversial mistake in latest 7-round mock draft, which would waste a top pick
The Washington Commanders have a critical draft ahead, and one top NFL Draft expert predicted them to make the biggest mistake by taking an unnecessary position with the No. 147 overall pick.
The Washington Commanders are quickly approaching the 2026 NFL Draft with just three weeks remaining until they start to select the future of the franchise.
They only have six picks to work with this year after trading their second and fourth-round picks for LT Laremy Tunsil, which was well worth it, but they have to land quality players with all of them. One NFL Draft expert did a full 7-round 2026 NFL mock draft, and he had the Commanders wasting a pick on an unnecessary position.
ESPN’s Matt Miller has the Commanders drafting QB Taylen Green with the No. 147 overall pick
It’s mock draft season, and the Commanders are being linked to a lot of top talent, especially with the No. 7 overall pick. They have to nail that pick, but they also have four of their six picks on day three, and they need to find underrated talent later in the draft.
ESPN’s NFL Draft Analyst Matt Miller has the Commanders making a very controversial pick by selecting Arkansas QB Taylen Green at No. 147 overall, their highest day-three pick and their third pick in the draft.
Taking their QB3 in the 2026 NFL Draft with their third pick is one of the worst scenarios for the Commanders. Yes, Green could be a really solid QB2 for the future, but there’s no need to draft one. Sign another undrafted QB, and address the position next offseason if needed.
They have Marcus Mariota for at least one more season, and that pick can go towards someone else. The Commanders have done their homework on QB Athan Kaliakmanis with a top-30 visit, and he could go undrafted or be a late-round pick. Regardless, there’s no need to waste a pick on a backup QB this year.
How the Commanders should approach day three of the NFL Draft
Having the majority of your picks on day three isn’t ideal, but we’ve seen them find talent in the later rounds like RB Bill Croskey-Merritt. The Commanders still have a lot of needs after an active free agency, and they could easily find WR and CB depth on day three, and I like a lot of the centers there as well.
The Commanders need to find potential starters on day three, and not a QB3 who could just become a potential backup QB for his career in Washington. They can address the position next offseason, or after the draft, without using a valuable draft pick.
