Grok simulates the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2026 NFL season and predicts a return to the playoffs fueled by new breakout stars
With training camp around the corner, I asked Grok to simulate the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2026 NFL season. It was surprisingly fair, with a 10-7 record prediction, second-place finish in the AFC West, and an AFC Wild Card berth.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ training camp opens in a few short days. Before we know it, the 2026 NFL season will be upon us.
With projections and hot takes of what the upcoming season could hold flying around across the internet, it felt like the perfect opportunity to try something a little different. I asked X’s AI system, Grok, to simulate the Chiefs’ upcoming season. The result? A 10-7 record, second place in the AFC West, and an AFC Wild Card berth.
Here’s a look at some of the finer details of Grok’s simulation.
Why Grok believes the Kansas City Chiefs are poised for a bounce-back season
Grok took into account all of the different storylines from throughout the 2026 NFL offseason for Kansas City. It felt the team is “positioned for a strong bounce-back season after their disappointing 6-11 record and first playoff miss since 2014.”
It noted that Patrick Mahomes is expected to be fully healthy and ready for Week 1 following his ACL/LCL injury in December 2025. Grok also noted that his recovery has been described as ahead of schedule.
It called RB Kenneth Walker III the “biggest upgrade” of the offseason, which should “finally give the offense balance and a legitimate ground game.”
Grok took into account the 2026 NFL Draft class and key depth like Emari Demercado and Tyquan Thornton. It even understood the promise of Justin Fields working alongside Andy Reid as a backup quarterback.
It said that overall, “The AFC West is competitive, but the Chiefs have the talent and experience to compete for the division or a wild-card spot.”
The game-by-game breakdown of the Chiefs’ 2026 NFL season
I was genuinely surprised how well Grok did with this simulation. It even managed to capture the Chiefs’ penchant for upset losses to teams they shouldn’t lose to. At the same time, I have a hard time with its wild-card postseason prediction and second-place AFC West finish with losses to the Broncos, Chargers, and Bengals. I also didn’t necessarily agree with the assessment of the early bye week occurring at the perfect time.
Here’s a look at Grok’s simulation and the brief descriptions it provided:
- Week 1: vs. Denver Broncos (MNF, Arrowhead)
Tough divisional opener on prime time with Mahomes making his post-injury return. Arrowhead will be electric, and the Chiefs’ improved run game helps control the clock. Close, high-stakes battle.
Prediction: Chiefs win 27-24.
- Week 2: vs. Indianapolis Colts (SNF, Arrowhead)
Colts are middling; Chiefs should handle business at home with a balanced attack. Mahomes exploits mismatches.
Prediction: Chiefs win 31-20.
- Week 3: @ Miami Dolphins (Hard Rock Stadium)
Road game against a volatile Dolphins team. Miami can be explosive but inconsistent. Chiefs’ defense (bolstered by rookies) limits big plays, but it’s a tough environment.
Prediction: Chiefs lose 24-27.
- Week 4: @ Las Vegas Raiders (Allegiant Stadium)
Raiders are the weakest in the division. Chiefs should dominate on both sides, especially with Walker pounding the run game.
Prediction: Chiefs win 30-17.
- Week 5: BYE
Perfect timing after a tough early stretch. Allows Mahomes and the new pieces to gel further.
- Week 6: vs. Los Angeles Chargers (Arrowhead)
Divisional clash at home. Chargers are competitive, but Arrowhead and Mahomes give KC the edge in a physical game.
Prediction: Chiefs win 24-21.
- Week 7: @ Seattle Seahawks (SNF, Lumen Field)
Tough road primetime game. Seahawks are competitive; the noise and environment make it challenging. Chiefs’ offense keeps it close but falls short.
Prediction: Chiefs lose 23-27.
- Week 8: @ Denver Broncos (Empower Field)
Rematch in Denver. Broncos are strong at home; altitude and their roster edge give them the win in another close one.
Prediction: Chiefs lose 20-24.
- Week 9: vs. New York Jets (Arrowhead)
Jets are not contenders. Chiefs control this one easily with superior talent and home-field advantage.
Prediction: Chiefs win 28-17.
- Week 10: @ Atlanta Falcons (Mercedes-Benz Stadium)
Winnable road game against a middling Falcons team. Balanced Chiefs offense and defense should prevail.
Prediction: Chiefs win 27-23.
- Week 11: vs. Arizona Cardinals (Arrowhead)
Cardinals are improving but not at KC’s level yet. Home dominance continues.
Prediction: Chiefs win 31-20.
- Week 12: @ Buffalo Bills (Thanksgiving, Highmark Stadium)
Brutal Thanksgiving road game against a strong Bills team. Buffalo’s physicality and home atmosphere are too much.
Prediction: Chiefs lose 21-28.
- Week 13: @ Los Angeles Rams (TNF, SoFi Stadium)
Short week on the road vs. a talented Rams squad. Fatigue and the environment lead to a loss in a shootout.
Prediction: Chiefs lose 27-31.
- Week 14: @ Cincinnati Bengals (Paycor Stadium)
Another tough road game vs. Joe Burrow and a dangerous Bengals offense. Close but Cincy edges it.
Prediction: Chiefs lose 24-27.
- Week 15: vs. New England Patriots (MNF, Arrowhead)
Patriots are rebuilding. Easy home win on prime time to keep playoff hopes alive.
Prediction: Chiefs win 35-17.
- Week 16: vs. San Francisco 49ers (Arrowhead)
Tough home game vs. a competitive 49ers team. Chiefs’ experience and home edge secure the victory in a grinder.
Prediction: Chiefs win 26-23.
- Week 17: @ Los Angeles Chargers (SoFi Stadium)
Split the season series; road environment and Chargers’ home strength prevail in the finale for the division.
Prediction: Chiefs lose 20-24.
- Week 18: vs. Las Vegas Raiders (Arrowhead)
Clinching or meaningless game vs. a weak opponent. Chiefs finish strong at home.
Prediction: Chiefs win 28-16.
The postseason prediction for the Chiefs feels like a fair one
Grok says that despite the 10-7 overall record, the Kansas City Chiefs will likely clinch a Wild Card spot as the No. 6 or 7 seed. It predicted a second-place finish in the AFC West behind Denver. The Chiefs would win their Wild Card game but fall in the Divisional Round to a top AFC team (it listed the Broncos, Bills, or Bengals as potential Divisional Round opponents).
It felt like a bit of a reality check for fans who expect this roster to return to contention immediately after a 6-11 season. However, Grok seemed to view this season as a building block toward that goal.
“No deep run this year, but it sets up better contention in future seasons.”
Who are the breakout stars for the 2026 Chiefs in the eyes of Grok?
Grok had some pretty strong opinions about the breakout stars for the 2026 Kansas City Chiefs.
It first named RB Kenneth Walker III as the “clear-cut breakout star and offensive centerpiece.” It predicted that Walker would have 1,200+ rushing yards, double-digit touchdowns, and a Pro Bowl nod. The most interesting part of the prediction is that Grok sees Walker as the piece that can “transform the offense into a balanced threat.”
Next, it had a bold take on rookie WR Cyrus Allen. It says he will step up in a “thin-but-talented wide receiver room.” Grok said that with Mahomes’ arm and Walker keeping defenses honest, Allen could have a 600+ yard rookie campaign.
It was bullish on first-round CB Mansoor Delane, saying he will immediately start and make an impact. “His ball skills and athleticism lead to interceptions and tight coverage; he could be a Defensive Rookie of the Year contender.”
Grok also felt that Peter Woods and R Mason Thomas would combine for double-digit sacks.
As for the other receivers, Grok mentioned Xavier Worthy and Tyquan Thornton. For Worthy, Grok expects a strong rebound from an injury-plagued 2025 with big-play deep touchdown production. For Thornton, Grok pointed to consistent targets and red-zone impact, making him a “reliable complementary piece.”
How do my Chiefs 2026 season predictions stack up against Grok’s simulation?
After the Chiefs’ schedule release, I shared my way-too-early predictions for the 2026 NFL season. I had Kansas City finishing with a 12-5 record, so two more wins than Grok cooked up in its simulation. Both Grok and I had losses to the Broncos, Rams, Bills, and Chargers. I feel like the area where we agree is that the road to the playoffs is entirely possible for this Chiefs team, but the road to the Super Bowl feels hard. The early bye week is a massive detriment. Without a first-round playoff bye week, the team will have to play 14 consecutive games, including three win-or-go-home contests just to make it to the Super Bowl. That’s extraordinarily tough and will take a special performance.
