Cleveland Browns training camp is here, and the quarterback competition between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders already has its first bit of drama. 

Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy found himself at the center of it after a viral video surfaced on X from ESPN Cleveland, appearing to show the Browns’ top wideout holding up four fingers when asked who he wanted as the starting quarterback.

The implication was that Jeudy preferred Watson, the player who wears the No. 4 jersey. The video caught plenty of attention, and Jeudy took to social media to walk back the notion that he was lobbying for Watson. That move makes sense. As a wide receiver, you don’t want to burn bridges with the players throwing you the ball. Whether or not Jeudy did signal his preference, he was never going to come out and confirm it publicly.

The QB battle is an important decision for Todd Monken

Jeudy doesn’t have a say in the decision. The Browns are going to go with whoever gives them the best chance to win in coach Todd Monken’s first season as head coach. That could be Watson, who missed the entire 2025 season recovering from an Achilles injury. It could be Sanders, who made seven starts as a rookie last season and went 3-4 with Cleveland.

If history has told us anything, the Browns are likely to start multiple quarterbacks in 2026. That has been the pattern each of the last few years in Cleveland, and there’s no guarantee either Watson or Sanders separates himself enough to hold the job all season.

Jeudy’s connection with Sanders was inconsistent in 2025

Jeudy had a down year in 2025 with 602 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 17 games. That came one year after a career-best 1,229 receiving yards in the same number of games. Jeudy and Sanders had trouble connecting at times last season, and one could point to that as a reason the veteran wideout might prefer pairing up with Watson. None of that is concrete, but it makes for compelling conversation as the full roster reports to Berea this week.

Rookies could reshape the WR room

Cleveland drafted KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston in the first two rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft, and both figure to be major contributors at wide receiver. In an ideal world, those two would emerge as the Browns’ top wideouts if not this season, then next.

Jeudy’s standing in the receiver room could shift regardless of who wins the quarterback job. For now, the Browns have their focus on finding their starting QB for 2026, and quarterbacks and rookies are already in the building to get things started.
