A.J. Brown’s early Patriots training camp struggles could make Eagles trade look like a fleece
New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown is generating the wrong kind of headlines at training camp and that news has already made it’s way back to Philadelphia and it’s something Eagles fans are glad to be done with.
A.J. Brown is already making headlines for the wrong reasons at New England Patriots training camp, and Philadelphia Eagles fans are loving every second of it.
Philadelphia faithful have been tracking Brown’s every snap since he arrived in Foxborough, and the early returns are not pretty. Day 1 brought one target and zero catches. Day 2 saw him erased by cornerback Christian Gonzalez, one of the best young corners in the game. Plus the report of Brown getting called out by Mike Vrabel.
The Eagles sent Brown to New England in exchange for a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick, and right now, that deal is looking better by the day for Howie Roseman and Philadelphia.
Now, I’m not going to sit here and completely trash A.J. the entire time. We know what he meant to this organization. He helped the Eagles accomplish a lot, and nobody is denying that. But the way last season played out was frustrating. It was annoying. And I do feel like he derailed things for this team. Philly fans watched that movie all season long. They knew how it ended.
The knee issue nobody talks about with A.J. Brown
What gets lost in all the drama and the relationship stuff is that Brown was dealing with a lingering knee issue last season. That part of the story doesn’t generate the same clicks as the sideline outbursts and the cryptic social media posts, but it might end up being the most important detail of this entire saga.
Brown is getting up there now, pushing into his late 20s. If that knee isn’t right, if he can’t get back to full health, this trade could end up looking like an absolute fleece by the Eagles. And honestly, even from the video coming out of Patriots camp, he’s not creating a ton of separation right now. Getting locked up by Gonzalez is nothing to be ashamed of, because that kid is a legitimate top-tier corner. But the lack of explosiveness is worth monitoring and something Vrabel has already had to address.
I want to be clear here. I don’t think Brown is washed. I still think he can have a productive season if he’s healthy. But there’s a real scenario where the knee continues to linger, the production dips, and the Eagles walk away from this situation having turned a disgruntled receiver into a future first-round pick and then some. That would be vintage Howie Roseman.
Philly had more leverage than we thought in this trade
The perception all offseason was that the Eagles had zero leverage in this trade. Brown wanted out, everybody knew it, and teams were going to lowball Philadelphia because of it. But looking back, I think Howie was more targeted in his approach than we gave him credit for. He knew Brown wanted to be in New England. He knew the connection to Mike Vrabel, the childhood fandom, all of that. And instead of panicking and taking the first offer that came along, he waited it out and got legitimate draft capital in return.
So yeah, Eagles Twitter is having a field day right now tracking every snap, every route, every incompletion. And honestly, can you blame them? This fanbase went through it last year with all the Brown drama. They earned the right to have a little fun with this. But beyond the jokes and the screenshots, there’s a real football conversation here about whether Brown still has it physically. The early camp footage suggests he has some work to do.
The Eagles got their draft picks, moved on from the headache, and now they get to sit back and watch. If Brown balls out in New England, good for him. But if the knee keeps limiting him and the production falls off, Howie Roseman is going to look like a magician. I think there’s probably a 60-40 chance this trade ages beautifully for Philadelphia.
