Big Ten program making late push to catch Miami Hurricanes for five-star athlete at the eleventh hour
The Hurricanes appear poised to land one of the top — and newest — players in the 2027 class, but one marquee northern program is closing the gap.
The Miami Hurricanes are looking to make one final major splash with their elite 2027 recruiting class, and 5-star Miami Columbus athlete Amir Sears could be the crown jewel. Ranked third by both major recruiting outlets, Mario Cristobal’s 2027 class could add one more marquee name before the summer ends. Sears announced his reclassification from the 2028 class to the 2027 class earlier this week, and his decision is set for 5 p.m. ET on Friday.
Sears was the No. 2 recruit by Rivals and the No. 1 overall recruit by 247Sports in the 2028 class prior to his reclassification. He remains a 5-star recruit by both outlets after being reclassified to 2027.
Michigan making a late push for 5-star athlete A’Mir Sears
The Hurricanes have been considered the favorite for the South Florida standout talent. However, one team has been pushing this week to catch Miami: the Michigan Wolverines.
According to Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong, the Michigan Wolverines are having discussions with Sears’ camp as decision day approaches. Michigan is a program that can compete with Miami and all other programs on the talent, NIL, and program prestige fronts.
That being said, when it comes to NIL, no one will top the Hurricanes, or at least not many programs will. Miami already held the advantage as it relates to location, with Sears being a South Florida product.
We’ll find out if proximity, NIL, and the rest of the recruiting pitch from Cristobal and his staff will be enough to land the talented two-way athlete on Friday afternoon. If Sears picks the Hurricanes, it would cap off a 2027 class that already ranks among the best in the country and would further indicate the turnaround that Cristobal has achieved in keeping top South Florida talent from leaving the area.
