Malachi Toney’s greatness has overshadowed Miami Hurricanes’ receiver room, and college football fans are about to find out in 2026
The Canes appear to have reloaded in their wide receiver room beyond the top names, and their passing attack could be deadly this fall.
The Miami Hurricanes enter the 2026 season with one of the best players, if not the best overall player, in all of college football in rising sophomore wide receiver Malachi Toney.
The 18-year old phenom took the college football world by storm last year, serving as a spark plug that helped lead the Hurricanes to the program’s first national championship appearance in almost a quarter of a century.
It started quickly, as the true freshman in his first game caught a touchdown in the Canes’ 27-24 win over Notre Dame before a national audience. By the time his first season was done, he’d lead all of FBS college football in catches with 109 to go with an ACC-best 1211 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns. He also threw for two more scores, rushed for another, and had 298 punt return yards. Quite the first season from Miami’s young superstar.
But beyond Toney, who has been the talk of college football this offseason after his breakout performance, the Hurricanes’ group of pass catchers has quietly become one of the most talented in the nation. Maybe not quietly with the addition of 1000-yard receiver Cooper Barkate, who came over with new starting QB Darian Mensah from Duke. But the talent and experience is there, as CBS Sports’ Blake Brockermeyer recently noted, ranking Miami as having the No. 2 group of pass catchers in the country.

Beyond Toney and Barkate, Mario Cristobal landed South Carolina WR Vandrevius Jacobs during this last portal cycle, who totaled 548 yards and four touchdowns on 32 catches (17.1 ypc). And while not mentioned by Brockermeyer, Miami added West Virginia WR Cam Vaughn this year in the portal, who notched 541 receiving yards and five scores on 35 catches last year.
Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson has done a nice job getting a number of pass catchers involved in the offense over the last couple of seasons. In 2024, Miami had five players crack the 500-yard receiving mark, with Xavier Restrepo leading the way with 1127 yards. In 2025, despite Toney’s breakout, Miami had three significant producers, with Keelan Marion second with 746 yards and two touchdowns and CJ Daniels third with 557 and seven scores.
The Hurricanes are loaded with talent again among their pass catchers, and with Toney taking up attention from opposing defenses, it could be another season of significant production from a number of faces in Miami’s passing game.
