The San Francisco 49ers are turning to a familiar face to serve as their Ricky Pearsall insurance policy.
The buzz around the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver room as of late hasn’t been great. This was supposed to be the year for former first-round draft choice Ricky Pearsall to finally break out.
But lingering knee issues have put hopes for a strong 2026 campaign on the rocks. And, conversely, the San Francisco 49ers are turning to a familiar face to serve as their proverbial Ricky Pearsall insurance. Deebo Samuel is back.

Some pairings just go perfectly together. Peanut butter and jelly. Mac and cheese. Deebo and the San Francisco 49ers. After a hiatus in Washington with the Commanders, Deebo Samuel will officially be re-joining the 49ers on what is reported to be a max value of $7 million for the 2026 season.
That’s not quite the money Deebo was making in Washington, but it’s also frankly not bad money for a signing at this time of year.
And with Mike Evans now in the picture, George Kittle working his way back from an injury, and Pearsall’s troublesome knee very much leaving things in question? Whatever incentives the San Francisco 49ers put into Samuel’s contract should probably feel reasonably attainable.
That is, of course, if Samuel keeps the form he’s known for with the ball in his hands. I’d expect Samuel to play as if he never left. He’s still got gas in the tank and Kyle Shanahan is obviously intimately familiar with his skill set.
What it means for Pearsall? Well, that’s a different story all together. It’s hard to imagine a player that’s had more tough luck than the former 1st round pick. Samuel’s return at least takes the pressure off for Pearsall to get his body right. Whatever it takes.
