The Buffalo Bills revealed their new Nickel City alternate uniforms for the 2026 season, and the reaction has been split right down the middle. The all-gray design, inspired by the Buffalo nickel, is meant to honor the city of Buffalo and the grit of Western New York’s hardworking people throughout history.

It’s a bold departure from the classic red, white, and blue Bills fans know and love. But the real question isn’t whether the uniforms look good on a mannequin. It’s whether the players actually want to wear them.

The design and the NFL’s color palette rules

Something important to understand about these Nickel City alternates: NFL clubs must use colors that already exist within their current palette when designing alternate uniforms. Gray technically falls within the Bills’ color scheme, which is how this all-gray look came to be.

Bills director of design Aaron Laporta explained the constraint, stating “Since this is essentially an alternate color rush designation, we must use a secondary base color that already exists in our color palette.”

I’ve always loved the red, white, and blue in the Buffalo Bills uniforms. The look is clean, the America colors are excellent, and it’s one of the more iconic schemes in the NFL. This Nickel City uniform, though, has me wondering whether guys are actually going to enjoy suiting up in these.

Josh Allen’s endorsement and Jordan Dajani’s skepticism

Bills quarterback Josh Allen addressed the discourse head-on during a press conference this week.

“Stop hating on the jerseys, guys, they’re great. I honestly like them. Speaking of new, it’s a new look. We’ve got to be new and I think these jerseys are symbolic of that,” said Allen.

Now, of course Josh Allen is always going to give the right answers when talking about the team and the organization. He’s Buffalo’s sweetheart, and that’s why we love him. But does he really like these new uniforms? I have no idea.

Jordan Dajani, NFL writer for CBS Sports,was recently asked the question of whether or not he believes in Allen’s opinion and he made his stance quite clear.

“I think he’s lying,” said Dajani. “You know, Josh Allen, he is a good franchise quarterback, okay? He’s going to support his staff and his team no matter what they make him wear.”

Look, I think Dajani makes a fair point. Allen is the consummate leader. He’s going to back his organization no matter what they put him in. That doesn’t mean he’s lying, but it also doesn’t mean he’s hanging that gray jersey in his closet at home.

And in Dajani’s defense – it’s not like he’s criticizing Allen or anything of that matter.

And to be frank, who actually cares what Allen likes to wear on game day? As long as the Bills win, it doesn’t matter. To add to that point – these are limited jerseys. It’s not like it’s going to be a week-in, week-out type of situation.

The verdict on the Nickel City look

The Bills will wear the Nickel City alternates twice during the 2026 season. Buffalo hasn’t announced which games yet, but the uniforms are coming whether fans embrace them or not.

The helmet? That part works. It keeps the Bills’ red, white, and blue, and it ties the whole thing back to something recognizable. The gray jersey, though, is a departure from the normal path of the Buffalo Bills uniform look. And trust me, they aren’t the worst alternates we’ve seen. The Pittsburgh Steelers wore some brutal alternate jerseys last year when hosting the Green Bay Packers. So this isn’t rock bottom for NFL fashion by any stretch.

But it may not be the best alternate the Bills could have come up with. The concept behind it is solid — honoring Western New York, leaning into the Buffalo nickel history, paying tribute to the city’s identity. The execution just feels like a missed opportunity when you consider how sharp Buffalo’s traditional look already is. These Nickel City uniforms might take some time to grow on people, but the Bills will be just fine on the field regardless of what they’re wearing.
