NFL is clearly testing Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills right out of the gate and it could define the 2026 season
The Buffalo Bills enter a big year under new head coach Joe Brady and the first several games of the schedule will provided a major test for the first-time HC.
Make no mistake about it, the NFL gave the Buffalo Bills a tough first six games of the 2026 season.
Training camp is underway, and with Week 1 fast approaching, the Bills’ schedule through their Week 7 bye week deserves a closer look, as Buffalo faces four playoff teams from last season in its first six contests, and the overall slate presents a real test for the Joe Brady era right out of the gate.
There are some silver linings in here, but this stretch is going to challenge Buffalo early. The key to success under Brady is going to be starting out fast, and the schedule isn’t doing the Bills any favors on that front.
A brutal opener followed by 3 straight at home
Week 1 sends the Bills to Houston for a 1 p.m. ET kick on Sept. 13, and that is a tough one.
The Texans boasted the No. 1 defense in the league last season, and going on the road against that unit right off the bat is no easy task. Brady will still control the offense with Josh Allen back there, but there are new pieces around him like wide receiver DJ Moore. Going against that type of defense with a retooled roster in Week 1 is going to be a real measuring stick.
Now, the good news: After Houston, the Bills come home for three straight games. Week 2 brings the Detroit Lions on Thursday night for the opener at the new Highmark Stadium. That should be an outstanding atmosphere, and I think the fan turnout Buffalo always gets will be a genuine advantage. Following that, the Chargers and Patriots come to town in Weeks 3 and 4.
The Lions and Chargers are both quality opponents, and even New England shouldn’t be overlooked, but the silver lining is clear: playing all three at home gives Buffalo a great opportunity to stack some wins.
Back-to-back trips out west
Right after those three home games, though, the Bills hit the road for two tough ones. Week 5 takes them to Los Angeles against the Rams, who are obviously among the Super Bowl favorites heading into the season. Then in Week 6, it’s off to Las Vegas to face the Raiders. The Raiders are not expected to be a great team, but that is another week of making the trip all the way out west. That is a lot of travel in back-to-back weeks for the Buffalo Bills, and it could wear on a roster that will have already played some demanding football.
There is a chance Buffalo could just stay out West for those two games, but that remains to be seen.
Honestly, I think the bye comes at a really good time in Week 7 after that West Coast swing. With the potential of a lot of travel in two weeks and some tough football played early. I know the back half of the schedule after the bye is longer than this first stretch, but the Bills are certainly going to need rest and recovery at that point in time.
Buffalo should come out of this stretch with a winning record
Look, the NFL gave the Bills a hard road to start the season, but it is the Buffalo Bills. Everyone wants to see them play. Everyone wants to see Josh Allen do his thing. I think Buffalo is going to make it out of this first stretch of 6 games with a winning record, but it is going to be a tough road ahead. The Bills have to stay healthy throughout training camp and be ready to roll come Week 1 in Houston.
If they come out of this slate of games with a winning record, it’d be a major boon for the season, as a whole. If not, well, then the Bills will find themselves fighting to get back on top after the bye week.
