Kansas City Chiefs avoid disaster with latest Cyrus Allen update after injury during Day 4 of training camp
The Kansas City Chiefs avoided a total disaster with rookie standout Cyrus Allen’s injury, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He has a bone bruise on his shin and is considered day-to-day.
The Kansas City Chiefs avoided disaster after rookie WR Cyrus Allen suffered a lower left leg injury in a collision with a teammate during special teams drills at training camp.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, testing revealed that Allen suffered a shin bruise. Nothing was torn or broken per the report. The Chiefs consider Allen day-to-day, according to KC Star columnist Sam McDowell.
Allen was down on the field after the injury and had to be helped to the injury tent by the training staff. He was unable to put his full weight on his left leg. He was examined in the training tent before the team carted him up the hill for further evaluation. The only saving grace in that was that he rode in the front of the cart. However, the rookie was visibly shaken, pulling his jersey up over his face.
A fifth-round pick out of the University of Cincinnati, Allen has emerged as one of Patrick Mahomes’ favorite targets. That was apparent and consistent through the team’s rookie head start and the first several full-team practices of training camp. Dave Toub spoke about the situation after practice, explaining why the rookie standout was still playing special teams.
The Chiefs’ injury scare with Allen still shows how the team still needs to change in its antiquated ways
Chiefs HC Andy Reid is very much a creature of habit. He’s set in his tried-and-true methods for success and team-building. Rookies very much have to earn their keep in the league regardless of draft status. That’s not unique to Coach Reid; it’s a universal fact of playing in the NFL.
Because of that, Allen’s injury might feel unavoidable. After all, the rookie himself said he wanted to be a four-phase special teams player. Yet, when a player like Allen is emerging as a favorite target for your star quarterback, maybe it’s time to dial him back. After this injury scare, the Chiefs’ decision-makers should look themselves in the mirror and ask if he really needs to be playing on special teams.
Things can change quickly in the NFL. Injuries can happen on any play, in any phase of the game. The Chiefs got lucky this time. They might not be so lucky next time.
