The Las Vegas Raiders have already started padded practices. That means things are really starting to get serious. Klint Kubiak, the rookie head coach, is running his first training camp.

And that could be a concern coming into the season. There could be concern that Kubiak might not know what he’s doing, or that he might make some rookie mistakes here and there. But ultimately, if he wasn’t fit for the job, he wouldn’t have been hired. And the players feel the difference, too, in training camp.

Raiders defensive tackle Thomas Booker talks about Klint Kubiak’s training camp

“It’s kind of interesting for me because this is technically my first Raiders camp,” Booker told reporters on Monday. “I got traded here two days before the preseason game last year. So, getting to see it from this kind of shade. I guess the last training camp I was in was in Philly, but everything’s so efficient here.

“That’s the thing that sticks out to me. Going from period to period, from individual to team to seven-on-sevens, special teams periods. It’s all going quickly. So, it feels efficient. It feels intentional. It feels purposeful, and obviously physical.”

The Raiders have had some good training camps over the years. It’s very evident, based on everything we have heard from both players and media, that last year’s camp is not one of those in that discussion. It appears Pete Carroll and his staff just didn’t have it together. That’s not a report or anything; that’s just based on what we have heard. Only the players and the franchise know the answer to that.

But when you have guys like Jeremy Chinn saying that he’s watched clips of practice and it’s almost embarrassing, then that says a lot. It has to feel good as a Raiders fan or player to know that Kubiak has things down the way they should be. And again, that’s not to say Pete Carroll didn’t know how to, but last year the results showed that something was off. This training camp is going great, and that could be a good sign of things to come.
