Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides key injury updates after Day 7 of training camp practice in St. Joe
The Kansas City Chiefs had a few new injuries at one defensive position on Wednesday. Head coach Andy Reid briefed reporters on them after practice.
The Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up their third consecutive padded practice of training camp, but unfortunately, some new injury developments emerged.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid spoke to reporters after practice, touching on both previously known injuries and new ones across the roster. Coach Reid provided updates on wide receiver Cyrus Allen (shin), wide receiver Xavier Worthy (shoulder), and defensive end Ashton Gillotte (hamstring), among others. He also revealed two new injuries at a position where Kansas City can least afford them.
“As far as the injuries go, Cyrus (Allen) didn’t practice today but is making improvement there,” Reid began. “(Jeffrey) Bassa would be the new one. He had a groin strain. We’ll just see where that goes. (Kristian) Fulton has a hip flexor strain. (Ashton) Gillotte is still making progress with the hamstring. (Drue) Tranquill just had low back spasms, and so we backed him off there. And then Xavier’s (Worthy) making progress on the shoulder. Other than that, I think that covers that part.”
Kansas City Chiefs linebacker depth takes a hit with Bassa, Tranquill injuries
The linebacker injuries to Jeff Bassa and Drue Tranquill are the ones to monitor, given that the Chiefs do not have the most substantial depth at the position. Jack Cochrane got a lot of work alongside Nick Bolton and Cooper McDonald on Wednesday.
“Jack (Cochrane) knows all the positions,” Reid told reporters. “He knows everything. He’s a good special teams player, on top of that. So, you feel comfortable as a coach putting him in any of the spots, and he knows that part of it. So, you need a couple guys like that out there.”
The injury to Bassa is particularly disappointing because he’s had a strong camp in his second year. Tranquill also looked to be one of the more energetic defenders at camp, and injuries have hampered his ability to contribute in recent years. Kansas City wants to see him fully healthy heading into the 2026 NFL season.
Felix Anudike-Uzomah impressing with Ashton Gillotte still sidelined
With Gillotte still dealing with his hamstring injury, Felix Anudike-Uzomah has earned more opportunities along the defensive line. Reid had positive things to say about the defensive end’s development.
“You can tell that his explosion off the ball is better,” Reid explained. “He’s working through just playing, but he’s doing a nice job with it. Way different, though, getting off the ball. There’s one thing that jumps out to me; it’s that.”
The fact that Reid is singling out his get-off at the line of scrimmage is a good sign. That’s one of the most important traits for an edge rusher trying to carve out a roster spot, and the extra reps created by Gillotte’s absence are giving him a real chance to prove he belongs.
Rashee Rice returns to 11-on-11 team drills
The wide receiver position is still dealing with injuries to Worthy and Allen, both of whom Reid says continue to make progress. However, Kansas City did get a positive development at the position on Wednesday with Rashee Rice finally taking part in 11-on-11 team drills.
Reid spoke about Rice’s return to team work as well.
“He got a lot of good reps today, which is important,” Reid said. “You just got to ease him back in and just keep working. And we know he’s a good football player, so you can actually see he got better as practice went on. So that was a good thing.”
Rice getting back into team drills is a significant step for an offense that needs him healthy and ready for Week 1. The fact that he improved as the session went on suggests the rust is coming off quickly.
More opportunities for the rest of the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster
The Chiefs have some early training camp injuries they’re going to have to work through, but those absences are providing more opportunities for other players. Guys further down the depth chart are ramping up their workloads on both sides of the ball, and players like Rice are getting a chance to reintegrate into the offense.
Kansas City has seven more practices before its upcoming preseason game, giving the roster another full week of work. That window allows injured players time to get healthy and get back on the field, while also giving younger players and roster hopefuls more chances to make an impression. Stay tuned for the latest injury updates as training camp practices continue.
