The Pro Football Hall of Fame game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Carolina Panthers delivered a touching moment for the LaFleur family. Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur shared a warm exchange with his brother Mike, the new Arizona Cardinals head coach, before the younger brother’s first game leading an NFL sideline.

Even though the Hall of Fame game was a preseason exhibition, the significance wasn’t lost, and NBC’s pre-game show allowed them to talk right before the kickoff. They shared some jokes, but it was also clear how proud Matt is of his brother.

“I did tell the officials that I’m not gonna slam the challenge flag like my brother,” Mike joked.

“I did not expect that right there,” Mike added. “I appreciate that, guys. That’s pretty cool. I appreciate that. Come on, man, now you’ve got me a little bit emotional.”

A relationship bigger than football

The LaFleur brothers actually haven’t spent much time working together in the NFL. Their only shared stint came with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015 and 2016, when Matt served as the quarterbacks coach and Mike worked as an offensive assistant. Since then, their careers have taken separate paths.

Matt has been the Packers’ head coach since 2019, after also working for the Los Angeles Rams and Tennessee Titans. Mike spent time with the San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, and also the Rams before earning the Cardinals job. Matt traveled to Arizona for Mike’s introductory press conference earlier this year, reinforcing the bond between the two.

Both teams play in the NFC, so the competitive element exists. But this was a moment that transcended football. The relationship between these two brothers obviously means a great deal to both of them, and seeing them together on an NFL sideline carried genuine emotion.

Carson Beck delivers for Arizona

As for the game itself, rookie quarterback Carson Beck turned in a strong performance for the Cardinals. He completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown, with a 125.4 passer rating. The final score of a preseason game doesn’t matter much, but a young quarterback looking comfortable in his first NFL action is a positive outcome for Arizona. And it certainly makes the decision to give a salary bump to Jacoby Brissett even more questionable, even though it’s just the first preseason action.

For Mike LaFleur, though, that was about as good an outcome as he could have hoped for in his debut.
