Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke to the media on Monday after the Week 2 win over the Indianapolis Colts on “Sunday Night Football.”
Thankfully, the team had no injuries to report following the Week 2 win. Coach Reid said he had no new updates on either of the two players ruled out for the Colts game. However, that wasn’t entirely genuine.
“On the injury front, I don’t have anything new for you on Josh (Simmons),” Reid said. “I don’t have anything new on (Chamarri) Connor. So, we’ll just hit all that as the next couple of days go on.”
Reid did provide an update on Josh Simmons’ status after he missed the past two weeks with a back injury. He also elaborated on the situation with Mansoor Delane, who was active but did not play a single snap in Week 2.
What’s the latest on LT Josh Simmons’ status after Week 2’s win over the Colts?
Chiefs HC Andy Reid cleared the air regarding Josh Simmons on Sunday. While he hasn’t been seen at practice, he’s been at the facility, rehabbing and working hard to get back on the field. This goes against the narrative that has been spun up about the former first-round draft pick.
“No, he’s doing everything,” Reid said of Simmons. “He is working his tail off. It’s just, you know, we knew it’d be a couple — two, three, four games here — as long as he was making progress. So, we’ll just see where he’s at. He’s kind of in that flex area there to see exactly how that thing is, if it’s calmed down and some of the swelling calms down, but we’ll see.”
The Chiefs will reevaluate Simmons this week. He’s teetering between returning to practice and needing more time. He could return to practice in a limited capacity as early as Wednesday, but they have to see how his injury is progressing. This is the first time we’ve heard the term “swelling” regarding Simmons’ back.
What’s going on with Chiefs rookie CB Mansoor Delane’s shoulder?
Chiefs CB Mansoor Delane dressed for Sunday night’s game but didn’t play a single snap. Coach Reid said after the game that he was an “extra man.” Here’s what he said went into the decision to hold him out against the Colts.
“Yeah, it wasn’t coming around as fast as we wanted,” Reid said of Delane. “He was right on the border there of, ‘alright, you can get in and play and play a full game, or just let’s see if we can get it to calm down a little bit more.’ And maybe he’s better this week, you know. So, it was a tweener position to be in. But he wanted to suit up, and if needed, he could have gone in. But we were trying to keep him out of having to play a full game in there for sure.”
Being that he was close to playing in Week 2, it’s safe to wager that Delane will be available to play in Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins. The question is whether the Chiefs will feel the need to put him back out there, or if they’ll rely on Kristian Fulton for another week and let Delane heal up even further.
